Restaurant Spotlight - Amami Sushi
This month, I had the pleasure of visiting Amami Sushi, a charming new addition nestled in the heart of Main Street, occupying the space that once housed Hal Yamashita. As a family-run gem focusing on the art of sushi, Amami presents an array of exquisite options, including a standout 10-piece omakase offering for just $60—an experience that marries affordability with the finesse of fine dining.

The atmosphere on the night of my visit was electric—echoes of lively banter, laughter, and the unmistakable freshness of the sea infused every corner. Amami Sushi rekindled my nostalgia for NYC's sushi scene, satisfying a deep-seated craving with each bite.
The added charm of it being a BYOB establishment only enhances the allure, promising an evening of delightful dining without the extravagance of a hefty price tag.
Winery Spotlight - Allora Vineyards
Nestled in the heart of St. Helena lies Allora Vineyards, a name that has become synonymous with the intimate and luxurious world of artisanal winemaking. My visits to Allora are always imbued with a sense of coming home; it's not just the warmth of Terry and Nancy Klein that envelops you but also the palpable passion that they pour into every bottle.
From its inception in 1997, Allora has been a testament to the Klein's family ethos—a beacon of personal touch in the industry, producing a mere 1,200 cases annually. The wines, a treasure trove of sophistication, are as rare and authentic as the vineyard's story, rooted deeply in the rich, well-fertilized soils of their 15-acre estate.
Terry's vision, inspired by the scenic beauty of Tuscany, is mirrored in the very essence of the vineyard's name, 'Allora'—a word that embodies affirmation and continuity. It's a word that, much like the estate itself, stands as a herald of fine beginnings and finer legacies.
With each visit, I am reminded that Allora is a cherished narrative of winemaking. The estate, cradled at the narrowest waist of Napa's hourglass, benefits from the perfect blend of climatic touch—a cool breath at dusk and a warm kiss at dawn. Here, the fruit doesn't just grow; it thrives, tended with organic care and the insightful guidance of renowned viticulturists.
The Kleins, now dear friends, craft some of my most treasured wines. Their connection to the land, their innovative spirit, and their unfaltering dedication to creating extraordinary experiences in every glass is what makes Allora stand out in a valley of vinicultural excellence. It's where great wines start, indeed, but it's also where great friendships blossom.
Wine Spotlight - Viader
In the picturesque hills of Napa Valley, there lies a winery that embodies the spirit of excellence and dedication: Viader. Founded by Delia Viader and now led by her son, Alan Viader, Viader has become synonymous with exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of Howell Mountain.
At Viader, winemaking is more than just a craft—it's a legacy passed down through generations. Delia Viader's journey from Argentina to Napa Valley is a testament to the transformative power of passion and determination. With a profound respect for the land and a commitment to innovation, Delia laid the foundation for Viader's success, creating wines that capture the essence of their mountainous terroir.
Having last visited the estate myself in April 2022, I was struck by the warmth and dedication of Alan, Mariela, and the entire Viader team. They welcomed me back to their estate, and also congratulated me on my move to Napa, two months prior. Their commitment to quality and their innovative approach to winemaking are evident in every bottle.
Today, Alan Viader carries on his mother's legacy, overseeing vineyard management and winemaking operations with a keen eye for quality and a spirit of exploration. From the signature "Liquid Cashmere" blend to the innovative DARE by Viader series, each wine reflects the Viader family's unwavering dedication to excellence.
At a recent dinner with friends, I was thrilled to discover the 2015 DARE by Viader Merlot on their wine list. Crafted from estate-grown grapes on Howell Mountain, this single-varietal Merlot offers a glimpse into the terroir-driven wines of Viader. With its elegant structure, vibrant fruit flavors, and velvety texture, this wine is sure to delight the senses and leave a lasting impression.
